Dear Discovery Team

I just wanted to say how much my kids are enjoying “junior gym” on Tuesday after school. I have to say I am amazed…as before this experience, I had never come across an activity that all three of them all agree they want to do and even more amazing is their commitment to returning week after week. As a parent, I am delighted that they are getting regular exercise and having so much fun at the same time. And oh yes, there is the added bonus that I get a child free hour in the gym at the same time! So everyone is happy!  Please pass on my thanks to the “junior gym” instructors for doing such a great job and inspiring the next generation!

I was spoilt with good food and good wine and used my recreational time very poorly. I decided that I wanted to live a healthier life and do everything I could to prevent illnesses caused by poor lifestyle choices. I had a friend that had recently joined Discovery Health & Fitness and she suggested I come along. My first session was an outdoor training session held at Oxley Oval. I did not realise how unfit I had become. I have participated in sport much of my life which included rugby union, soccer and later tennis and never thought that one day a run around an oval would be so difficult. Despite feeling the way I did, I signed up for 10 outdoor training sessions. My trainer would take a small group of us and we would train at various locations around our town and beautiful coastline. At the end of the 10 sessions my fitness had started to improve and I could at least run around the oval. I wanted to continue training with my trainer and it was then  I joined the gym. I had always thought gyms were for muscle bound men and women in lycra and never thought I could "fit in". But from my very first day I felt welcome and comfortable and still feel this way 3 years later and going to the gym is now part of my weekly ritual. I have a personal trainer, Sue Montgomery, and she works with me once a week. We have gradually increased my fitness and changed my body and I'm happy to say I no longer have a concerning waistline. My personal trainer also gives me healthy living and and eating tips and each session pushes me to my limits but in a fun way. I also participate in classes with my favourite being the circuit class. These early morning classes are a fun fit way to start the day. I have made many good friends at Discovery and the benefit to my health is something that I feel every day.

You might know me from some gym participation's such as fat burner, body balance, cycle 4 life, lunch time specials and more, but I won't go on. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the team at Discovery for all their support and goodwill towards me in meeting my body health goals. As you guys know this support has been forwarded onto my family who have become members of the gym. It is great to have programs that suit all levels of fitness and that also cater for the younger family members too i.e. GI Junior. Time has flown, the results are showing and the partnership between the Borg family and the Discovery team is strong. I thank all of you again for making the gym atmosphere inviting and pleasurable.

After my first week of training I started to feel "Good". This has motivated my attendance at Discovery three times a week for about 8 years! At 65, recent tests revealed a "fitness age" of 29. As well as the obvious physical outcomes, our "Vital" classes have enormous social benefits. Our trainers & our members make DISCOVERY a HAPPY PLACE.

Due to a forfeit at Multi-Sports, I convinced a friend to join me in an Aerobics class at Discovery Health & Fitness. Step Combo it was called. I must admit I felt a little un-coordinated the first time. The instructor knew what she was doing, that's for sure, completely professional and very fit. An inspiration really! After just a couple of classes the steps certainly became easier (and I loved the challenge). I was able to try a variety of classes over 12 days at no cost. Body Balance was a first favorite, perfect for a beginner, but a workout at the same time. Becoming more confident, I ventured into the Fat Burner/ cardio classes, which I found a lot of fun. Since joining Discovery as a member in July 2008, I have never looked back. Six days a week I participate in a variety of classes and have become much fitter and stronger. I've made friends, being members and staff. They are people of all ages and fitness levels. Some committed to losing weight and others like myself just for the love of exercise. I have young children and find the quality of child care available to be of high standard. Most certainly I would recommend Discovery Health & Fitness to anyone looking for a friendly atmosphere with great people to exercise with and more importantly good times.

Just a quick note to thank you all for the coaching and guidance provided over the past few weeks.


The completion of the City 2 Surf was something that I have been thinking about for years and never taken the iniative to complete. Now not only have I completed it, but managed to run the full distance without once needing to stop. I have also got the “bug” for running & specifically triathlon and look forward to competing in a few Olympic distance events this year followed by the half and then full ironman events in the coming years.


I would also like to thank Sue, Michael and yourself for making me feel welcome and part of the Discovery family.


As further gratitude, I thought you might appreciate hearing of the difference you have made over the six weeks of training. Since starting I have lost an additional 4.5kgs (now a full 10kg since Nov ’06), 6cm off my waist (total 26cm) and after a 5km time trial run that I was doing prior to starting training with you guys I have cut an amazing 7 minutes off my prior times (plus I can now run the full distance without walking). Most importantly I am no longer obese according to my BMI and sit in the overweight category (not for to much longer J)

After the birth of my third child, I was keen to lose some weight, improve my fitness and get involved in something recreational that I could work around the demands of part-time employment and a young family.


I decided to join Discovery Health & Fitness and got so much more than I as expecting. All the staff were friendly & willing to help me set my personal goals and then support and motivate me to achieve them. I was really surprised not only by the friendly and comfortable nature of the gym but by the variety of activities that were available.


In the past I'd quickly become bored with doing the same exercise routines repeatedly and I realised that a big part of maintaining the motivation was to get plenty of variation in my exercise regime.


Discovery offers a variety of classes, including spin classes, personal training, boot camp, City to Surf training and modern well maintained exercise equipment. In addition to these, I was provided with nutritional advice to help me make the lifestyle changes I was looking for.


Eighteen month later I have lost 20kg's and more than 15% body fat. I've completed 3 boot camps, 2 personal training and regularly attended a variety of classes. As a result, my fitness has improved, I have lots more energy and have met some terrific people who I regularly train with.
